The company
Container Exchange (COEX) is the Government appointed organisation responsible for establishing and operating Queensland’s Containers for Change scheme. Through the scheme, COEX helps reduce container litter, increase recycling and deliver meaningful benefits to individuals, charities and communities across Queensland.

Operating in a highly commercial and regulated environment, COEX has built a mature and well-respected in-house legal function that is embedded within the business and involved early in strategic decision-making. Due to evolving business priorities, it is now looking to appoint an experienced Senior Corporate Counsel in a newly created role.

The role
This is a senior Commercial role with a strong emphasis on strategic commercial transactions, complex contracting and procurement, regulatory advisory, business transformation initiatives, customer and operator matters, and broader commercial advisory work.

Working closely with senior stakeholders across the organisation, your responsibilities will include:

  • Leading the drafting, negotiation and management of complex commercial contracts and procurement arrangements; 
  • Supporting regulatory change, risk and business transformation initiatives; 
  • Advising on commercial, contractual and operational matters in a regulated environment, including customer and operator matters, complaints, contractual breach reporting and remediation; 
  • Providing advice on marketing, consumer law and intellectual property;
  • Assisting with the development and maintenance of legal frameworks, supporting documentation and commercial templates;   
  • Mentoring junior members of the legal team and contributing to knowledge sharing across the function; and
  • Building trusted relationships with stakeholders across the organisation to deliver practical, commercial legal advice.

About you
You will be an experienced commercial lawyer who enjoys partnering with the business and providing practical, solutions-focused advice.
You will ideally bring:

  • Approximately 8+ years’ PAE gained in private practice, in-house or a combination of both;
  • Strong experience drafting and negotiating complex commercial contracts;
  • Experience supporting significant strategic projects or commercial initiatives; 
  • Experience working in highly regulated environments;
  • Excellent stakeholder management and influencing skills;
  • A pragmatic approach to legal risk and commercial decision-making;
  • Experience in areas such as procurement, consumer law, marketing, intellectual property or regulated industries will be well regarded;   
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a collaborative approach;
  • Eligibility to hold a Blue Card; and
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a satisfactory criminal history check.
